28) With careful removal of paint layers, I was able to find its WD number, T146309

29) Likewise the USA number, W- 3057081. This tallied with the records for hull no 5271, built in September 1942.

30) First stage was the removal of the turret.
The gun is not really this short, it has just slid back inside the mount.
Note the first pattern M34 mount without the protector ears either side of the tube.

31) This shows the condition of the interior after removal of the turret.

32) This is after the remains of the basket were removed.
The split weld is visible on the left (right-hand side).

33) This shows the damage more clearly.

34) This shows the amount of metal I had to remove to repair the damage to the right-hand side. It needed about a metre of the side plate (38mm thick), 2.7 metre of sponson and about a third of the engine bulkhead.
The floor I was able to straighten.

35) This is a similar view after repair.

36) Close up view of the damage in the left-hand sponson.

37) I had to cut out a section of the left-hand sponson and the lower part of the bulkhead. This shows the repair.
